06 — The family story
A lord, a library of books
and a family handover.
For all its grandeur, this Silver Spur has led a wonderfully ordinary family life.
It left Jack Barclay in Berkeley Square on 19 November 1982, finished in Dark Oyster with Mushroom leather, red piping and a black Everflex roof. The surviving diary later records that it had once belonged to Lord Hanson. That is an intriguing part of the car’s story, although the earlier ownership still needs independent documentary confirmation.
In about 2009 the car came to David Irving from the widow of one of his supporters. A long restoration followed. Once back on the road, the great long-wheelbase saloon was used less like a museum piece and more like a member of the family: for London errands, trips to the Post Office and occasional journeys north, sometimes with the cabin carrying boxes of books.
A January 2012 workshop photograph shows the car wearing registration JH 2268; later records know it as OYL 366Y. Toward the end of July 2026 it passed from David to his daughter, Paloma Irving, beginning a new chapter of careful recommissioning and documented family stewardship.
Modern comfort, reversibly fitted
A Pioneer AVH-Z7200DAB has now been purchased for a reversible Apple CarPlay and DAB upgrade. Installation is still pending a physical fit and wiring check; the Kenwood unit and every removed component will be retained.
A useful distinction: this is David’s later 1982 Silver Spur. It is not the coffee-brown Silver Shadow remembered from Paloma’s childhood; that was a separate car.
