Begin with safety, not shine

The temptation with an old Rolls-Royce is to begin with paint and leather. This project begins with the soft brake pedal. The hydraulic and braking systems must be inspected by someone who understands the model before the car is road-tested. Only then come the wiper, central locking, suspension diagnosis, fluid leaks, cooling, tyres and electrical reliability.

Preserve the evidence

The aim is conservation rather than a cosmetic reset. Every area should be photographed before cleaning or dismantling. Original labels, fittings, veneer and leather matter. Removed components will be labelled and stored, even where a modern replacement is more convenient.

The Pioneer AVH-Z7200DAB plan

A Pioneer AVH-Z7200DAB has been purchased to bring wired Apple CarPlay, DAB radio, hands-free calling and a motorised seven-inch display to the car. The existing Kenwood already occupies a single-DIN position, which makes the Pioneer a plausible fit, but not an automatic one.

Before installation, the cage depth, screen deployment path, speaker wiring, ignition feeds and earths must be checked physically. The open screen must not touch the walnut or padded surround. A microphone can be routed behind trim to the mirror or visor, and the CarPlay USB lead can be placed in the glovebox without drilling visible bodywork.

Installation rule: use a removable adaptor loom, do not cut the factory wiring or drill the dashboard, and retain the Kenwood, its cage and every removed part. The purchase is recorded; installation remains pending.

Finish with the cabin and paint

Leather should be cleaned and assessed before recolouring. Veneer needs a cabinetmaker or automotive wood specialist who can distinguish failed lacquer from damaged timber. Known corrosion around the door shut, wheel arch and rear corner must be investigated beneath the surface before small paint touch-ups make sense.

A useful car, not a static exhibit

If the recommissioning succeeds, the Silver Spur should be driven regularly enough to stay healthy. Carefully planned chauffeur work could help fund that maintenance while giving the family a reason to keep the car exercised, documented and presentable.
